Does Collins submarine software still work properly?

Are these paradoxes of the Collins submarine software ? Do most project suffer from paradoxes ?

  • 1/There must have been a secret agreement to release a system that bore no ralation to the original intent. Because the original intent would have been to offer asystem which was "born integrated". Such a system one might simply "Start it up and see why it doesn't run" and fix any hiccups. 2/The system by definition would have been adequate to take to sea. If for some reason the primary mode was out of action, one might simply run the system in training mode, perhaps practicing firing synthetic missile at synthetic targets. If threats appeared and the submarine needed to protect itself, the training mode could be used to fire synthetic missiles at the real target - the fire and forget data to the synthetic missiles could be relayed to real onboard missiles.

  • Answer:

There seems to be a fascination in some quarters with the Collins submarine computer system. As is often the case, the proposed system was overly ambitious, and failed to live up to it's press, but I don't think there where and "secret" agreements. The inevitable "start it up" resulted from the pressures to field the system. Computer patches are also inevitable. Hopefully in the several years since this was front page news, there has been a lot of progress made and problems resolved. I'd bet that the submarines are very capable of delivering it's weapons under any conditions.
