What is my motor worth?

What would a 1965 Mercury 110 motor be worth?

  • My father has a 1965 110, 9.8hp Mercury outboard motor in brand new condition with only 2 hours on it. How much would it be worth?

  • Answer:

This is a very unusual situation. Even if it has been in a dry storage area, the bearings on the crank shaft could have rusted and pitted the crank shaft after all this time. The only way to know for sure is dis-assembly. It would not have a high value like some antiques. Even collectors don't pay much for these motors. It's almost impossible to value but I'm thinking $300......but if your selling it for someone to use as a fishing motor, I'd be afraid to start it. If it was packed in cosmoline and packaged in an air tight box.....then I don't know. You might donate it to a museum for a nice tax write off. I'd like to hear what some of the other answers have to say.

its weight in scrap metal, unless you find some one who wants to rebuild and restore a 1965 boat and have matching motor, we are talking about a motor that is over 45years plus the water pump impeller has got to be dry rotten after all these years

I have run into many of these long "sit" motors of questionable value and decided to just put them in a clean trash can and run them on double oil for a couple of hours. Make sure they pump water and run at about 1200 rpm. Don't let the prop splash all the water out and don't just leave the hose in the tank as the prop wash can suck the loose hose to destruction. I have double bungee corded the hose to the side of the motor. After an hour or so - take the motor for a cruise- and don't forget the oars! After 4 hours or so with out any rumbling or seizing from heat or scuffed pistons, you can declare it a winner with a clear conscience. These were a great motor -and fished great, but with many lakes following Calif's lead and making "4 stroke only" they can be a hard sell in some areas.

Probably more to your Dad than any one else, even in perfect condition. When were the two hours put on it, 1966? Any engine sitting around for years without really serious preservation techniques is basically a full restoration. The fine machined surfaces and any bearings not immersed in oil will be pitted, perhaps to the point of failure. Any plain bearing is possibly fine - but not if it has grown onto the crank or gudgeon and any attempt is made to turn the engine over dry... The $300 mark seems about right - but on Ebay I have seen absolute basket cases sold for more, so there you go. In the end the price you get after advertising well will be the market price on the day, that could be very little, or it might surprise us all if a movie company or collector wants it....

it would be a waste of money to fix. any thing you need for it would be hard to get and expensive good luck
