What's the difference between a boat and a ship?

Whats the difference between a ferry and a boat/yacht/cruise ship/ect?

  • Answer:

Ferry - A ship that carries passengers for a fee from one point to another, or for sightseeing adventures. Some may even carry vehicles for an additional fee. Boat - A vessel that is used for personal pleasure use and not for hire. Yacht - Another term used for a boat, but on a larger and more luxurious use. Cruise Ship - A vessel that is used as a floating, moving center for hire.

Before air travel, there were ocean liners that took people between e.g .Southhampton UK to New York. There were also ferries that took people from Dover to Calais across the English Channel. I'm not quite sure how they are different. I beleive ferries you usually can travel without booking, though some ferries you do book, and some travel overnight and you get a cabin, like a liner. With liners out of the picture, it's a bit easier - ferries travel over a fixed route, which is usually part of a longer multi-modal journey like from Londton to Paris.
