Where can I find a Manual for Mercury Classic 50?

My 85 HP Mercury outboard does not find reverse 50% of the time, any ideas?

  • Answer:

Take the shift cable off of the engine after making sure it is in neutral. Move the shift linkage forward until you feel resistance and mark it, then move it back until you feel resistance and mark it. Move the shift linkage into the middle between the 2 marks, that is where the shift cable should should be adjusted to for neutral.

It probably has to do with the shift control linkage. IT needs to be adjusted more than likely.

Try adjusting the linkage like previous answers, if this does not help it may be in your control itself. There is a set screw for adjusting the control inside the control panel itself which may be loose causing the control not to move the proper distance. Hope this may help you.

See the other explaination adjusting the linkage at the engine. Simple adjustment.

Take the cowl off the engine and take a look at the shifting linkage. It may just need to be adjusted a couple of turns.
