How do I get a cheap sailboat?

I am looking to get a used sailboat to teach my 20 year old daughters how to sail?

  • I do not want something that is too stable because I want them to get use to the fact that they could capsize at any wrong move. I was thinking something in the 14-15 foot range. maybe a force 5

  • Answer:

while a force 5 is a good little sailboat it is designed as a single handed boat with only a main sail. this may present concerns if you have two daughters plus yourself on board. my suggestion is to look at popular small sloop daysailers. find a sailboat class that is popular in your area. examples are 420's, 470's. catalina 15's, capri 14's, clarks, lido's, snipe's. rebels, hobie/holder14', o'day day sailers, thistles, etc. by choosing a sloop, you will be able to teach them how to sail under main and jib. and some of these boats even have spinnaker options. hope this helps

I love my AMF Sunfish. It is forgiving and easy to sail, but you will be swimming if you the wrong move. However, I learned on a Sandshark (a modified version of the Butterfly) and it was also a great little boat. They're about 13'--a tad under your range, but if given the option, I'd take any of those.

Laser or Laser II are good beginners as well. Several colleges use them for learners and initial racing practice/competition before moving into larger one design or fleet boats. If you plane to "move up" after a while, consider resale as well.

I am very much in agreement on a sunfish. It is a great teaching boat, goes fast and feels like it is going faster, and can be easily recovered in the event of a capsize. If you want to go larger there are quite a lot of good 16' sloops available. The AMF Sunbird isn't a bad choice, or a Day Sailer. These boats have small cubbies and you are not going to swim so much. BUT for the true beginner I think the Sunfish is supreme!

sail boards and sailing dingies are two completely different things! Lasers or toppers or fire balls are probably the best for teaching sailing! And more importantly having fun!

Pace stick and proud of it!

O'day sailor.
