What is my 20' boat and 140-HP OB motor worth and how do I find the serial number?
-
Trying to sell boat, trailer, and motor but can't determine an age for the motor so need some help in setting a fair price for all. We bought the 20' Commerical Cruise Craft boat and trailer in 1994 and the 140 HP Mercury Marine1400 Power Trim OB Motor with Sting Ray Hydro Stabilizer in 1995; both used. The boat complies with the U.S. Coast Guard Safety Standards (Max HP 200; Max Person: 1600 lbs; Max wt: 1900). We can't find the serial # on the motor (motor maybe built in 70's or 80's). Found a metal tag on the motor but it doesn't give serial #; just 978: M-900, M-1150, M-1400; Timing Pickup 4-6 BTDC, Max Spark-21 BTDC, AT 5500 RPM. Also found a number on one of the motor brackets (66083) but this doesn't seem to be a serial #. Also, are there any online sites for listing these for sale other than Ebay?

Boat Trader and you can serch for (used boat) in your search. Normally the ser.# is going to be imprinted on the cly. block somewhere. You should also be able to ask your local marina that deals with the brand of engine. Most of the time you will find the ser.# on your boat hull in the right rear of the stern. And you my also have to scraped away many coats of paint to see the numbers if the boat has been painted many times.

You can ask a Merc dealer to check for a serial number (and thus the age). I'm certain they will be able to find it. Some boat dealers down here in SW Florida take boats on consignment. Maybe you can find a dealer in your area who can help you. You can also try an ad in Used Boat Trader magazine.

Look online at several sources:Try Kelly Blue Book, BUC and NADA. You can gain comparisons by researching Yachtworld.com, eBay, Boatrader.com etc. Your boats condition is also relevant. Serial number isn't required to find general value.
