What's the solenoid on an automobile?

I have a 1979 470 mercruiser. The solenoid on it sticks.?

when i turn the key to start the motor, nothing happens. so i open the hood and tap the solenoid with a small hammer and that seems to loosen it up. the motor starts. i want to fix this problem and im sure the solenoid needs replacing on it. i kno that its not a marine solenoid that is on it right now. it gets very hot under the hood, so im thinking that thats what makes it stick. so im wondering whats the proper solenoid for this boat. one that is more heat resistant?

Merc part # 65057. If it sticks, it's faulty. If you have a rare 470 setup with a master solenoid, you can use the same one.
