Boating: where should your passengers be when you are tied to the dock fueling your vessel?

Is it the passengers or the drivers responsibility to jump off the boat and tie it to the dock?

  • When docking a boat, should the passengers at the back and front get off and tie it to the dock or should the driver do this which could result in the back end or front end floating away.

  • Answer:

Onboard my boats, everyone works. Passengers / guests get instructions for me, the Captain and the person who's responsible for everything on that boat. They don't have to tie the lines, but do have to hold lines and the boat at the dock until I'm able to shut everything down and get onto the dock to make fast all dock lines. I'm busy bringing the boat to a safe rest and holding the vessel in place. So yes, the passengers are responsible for handling dock lines. The ONLY reason that passengers would not be handling lines is if there aren't any! Then the sole person onboard gets to do everything.

The passengers should be the ones getting out and tieing the boat to the dock. If the driver got out then the boat would either drift away or hit other boats

I have a 48' Sportfish and it's not easy coming down from the Fly bridge to get the line . So It best to have your crew handle the line. First get the boat on the dock and No 1 jumps any time any where they step off or hand the line to some 1. Step off and secure the line. It's very easy if it's planed out before U reach the dock. 1 Person is in charge and gives the commands.Remember approach the dock no faster than U intend to hit it.

Think of them not as passengers... but as deck hands. lol Actually, it is your responsibiltiy to get where your going and back again safely... That includes, getting them off the boat and on to the dock. You have to use very good common sense with this. You as the skipper are the ultimate responsible person for everything and everybody on your vessel. If you need a deck hand, you need to get a volunteer or two and then show them the ropes. Make sure you show them what to do and when, with the first rule of thumb being keeping their eyes on you for the "OK" signal. Make sure they are capable & comfortable doing it. Many first timers are more then willing and even wanting to help... But may be scared to death of doing doing something wrong. So it is your job to train these people on docking procedures, your boat, where the life jackets are, etc. Never assume they know a single thing about a boat... much less docking or disembarking procedures. If you don't show them what to do, when and how to do it safely... don't blame them for sitting on their butts looking like deer in your headllights. I live on my boat... and by far... most accidents and injuries happen at the dock. Happy & Safe Boating, John

First the word "jump" should not be part of the instruction. No one should be jumping from a moving boat. If your boat is of the size that you need a deckhand you should have made those arrangements and instructions before the start of the trip.
