1955-1965 Evinrude 4.5 hp outboard motor???? Help!?
-
Hello! My fiance recently had his boat motor stolen. He said it was made between 1955 and 1965, it was an Evinrude 4.5 hp outboard motor. I have been trying to research it online to find the value of it, but I can't find an engine made by Evinrude in that time frame that is a 4.5 horsepower engine. The motor was in fairly good condition and he had plans to restore it. It was given to him by his late grandfather, and we will most likely press charges against the person who took it (because we know who it was...). I am having no luck finding this engine and am hoping there may be a collector or someone on here who could tell me a little bit about it??? Thanks for your help!

Answer:
I don't think Evinrude ever made a 4.5 HP motor. Johnson had one in the mid 30's. Maybe this was not a 4.5? Do you have any numbers from it? There is value to this motor (whatever it turns out to be!). There is a monetary value, but more than that a sentimental one as well. Here is a good site for antique motors; http://hoodad.fortunecity.com/index2.html Since you say you know who took it, file charges and have the Police help you. Then get some numbers off the motor and maybe we can find out what it is.

From your description, I'm thinking it's a 9.5 HP. They stopped production about 1972. While these are 50 years old, there are plenty still being used. However the value of a running engine is less than $200

I'm sorry but there is zero value on that old motor. I can't believe someone would risk going to jail for an antique motor that no one wants. If you know who has it; what are you waiting for. Go to the police and register a formal complaint against this person. Let the police handle it from there. Or go to the junk yard where you'll find plenty of these motors being sold for scrap.

Sorry for your fiance's loss. Get the police involved ASAP as others have suggested. I have been boating since 1948 and collect old motors, Value depends on the specific motor and condition. This one is unrestored and it sounds like most of the value is sentimental because it was his grandfather's. That makes it priceless to your fiance, but it is probably worth no more than $250 even if it is in good running condition. Evinrude never made a 4.5 hp motor. If you have the model number, look it up in the chart at the attached link to get the year it was made. http://www.marineengine.com/parts/model_guide_pre80.html
