How can I get my Tecumseh engine to get more power and speed?

My 2000 Mastercraft X-Star engine cuts out and looses power when I try to gain speed, any solutions?

  • When I open the throttle up the engine wont get to full speed and also seems to dramatically loose power in little spurts. I am not sure if it is a coincidence or not but this happened for the first time yesterday when I had two fat sacs filled up for the first time in the boat. After it happened I emptied the fat sacs but the problem persisted. Not sure if the fat sacs have any relation to the problem. I also removed the air filter and cleaned it out. I haven't yet taken the boat out today to see if that will resolve the issue. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Answer:

Filling the "Fat Sacs" had nothing to do with the operation of the engine. Those use a separate pump to full and empty. Do you have a "Perfect Pass" keyboard on the dash? if so, there's a signal being sent to the ECM causing the issue most likely. The ECM is reading the engine signals and getting signals from the "Perfect Pass" control unit too. Make sure the Perfect Pass is off and have that checked at the dealer. My buddy with a MC had the same problem and control had to be replaced. Since you don't have "Perfect Pass" you have a engine timing sensor going bad. This tells the ECM how much to advance or retard ignition timing. The engine has more than enough power to push the boat at max load.
