How do I check the history of a boat?

I am buying a used boat and I want to check its history. Is there anything like CarFax for Boats?

There is no carfax for boats. The best you can do is get a qualified surveyor to evaluate the quality of the boat. The easiest way to check the history of a boat is go to boathistoryreport.com and enter in the HIN (hull identification number) and you can find the boat's history report. See if it has been in an accident, damaged in a hurricane, run aground, salvaged, submerged, seized, environmental lien, In a fire, in a collision. I've been using the service for years and always been satisfied.

Your State may keep records. NC just started about 5 years ago keeping records on boats.
