How much money does an Ordinary Seaman make?

How much money does an able bodied seaman make a month while sailing?

  • and how much unemployment can they collect?

  • Answer:

An "Able" Seaman starts out at about $2,500 a month salary... Plus, he gets an additional 15% for all time away from his home port - when away; and gets time and a half for overtime (automatic 2 days a week when away). So, most make $40,000 plus their first year. As far as 'unemployment" goes. . . that is "government" insurance program (has nothing to do with the Merchant Marines)... I've never collected it, so I have no idea... but If knowing the answer to that, before you go to work is important to you... Be sure to ask your potential employer at your initial job interview. Happy & Safe Boating, John
