What kind of sailboat should i buy?

Should I buy a small flat boat?

  • I live in louisiana and absolutely LOVE redfish and speckled trout, and really any kind if inshore fishing. My parents really encourage me to do what I love but they dont have the money to buy me a boat. I have $300 and wanted some advice. My brother has a sailboat and I can use his 9 hp motor. I was thinking about buying a cheap used Jon boat. I am also planning to use it for duck hunting if possible. Do y'all think this is a good idea?

  • Answer:

    Great idea!

if you can find a used jon boat with the hull in good shape, or any aluminum hulled boat in which the hull is good shape, it would be worth owning. an alum hull can last forever. motor and electronics cant, but can be replaced every decade or 3 as needed. one thing i'd question, often the small outboards used on sailing vessels are long shaft motors, like mercury's bigfoots. those motor are not meant for use on vessels with short transoms, they would stick way deep in the water and cause lots of extra drag. which would cause ti use a lot more fuel. its probably do-able with a small boat and such a small outboard, but its not quite right. i'll point out you could buy a brand new canoe for about $300. you can buy a bracket to mount either a small outboard or a trolling motor, or scanoes are made with one end flat for mounting a motor of some sort on them. canoes and scanoes both go pretty fast with just oars, and are very cheap to operate. the coleman brand canoe/scanoes are literally unsinkable. i've run them into rocky ground, barely scratches them, i've filled them with water and attempted to sit them still, it will only sink for as long as something pushes it down other then just teh water. if you had a battery and trolling motor or other items attached to the canoe/scanoe, i'd have a life jacket strapped to the canoe/scanoe that can support their weight.
