What is the difference between a standby battery and a deep cycle battery?

Deep cycle marine battery?

  • I realize a for best efficiency a deep cycle battery (12v) requires a deep cycle charger. I already have 4 12v chargers. They range from a trickle charger, 6-10 AMP charger , 10 amp automatic charger and 10amp charger, I sure don't want to buy another one, but none are rated for deep cycle batteries. I have a deep cycle battery in a boat that powers a trolling motor, I usually charge it with one of my conventional chargers. Is a deep cycle charger going to be af any real benefit to me?

  • Answer:

There ain't no such thing. "deep cycle charger" is just a conventional battery charger. Use the automatic charger. Once the amperage has decreased to 1Amp or so, leave in on for a few more hours and then disconnect it. Deep cycle batteries are usually just conventional lead acid batteries with thicker plates and a slightly difference geometric construction to allow for greater buildup of sulfates on the bottom of the case. Chemically, they are identical to conventional batteries, but are not designed to delivery very high starting currents. You could use any charger designed for lead acid batteries.

Other answers

No, either one of the 10 Amp chargers will do the job. The main purpose of a deep cycle charger is to part you from more of your money. It takes a certain number of Amps to charge the battery and the battery doesn't care what the manufacturer calls the charger, as long as it puts out the amperage.

Any one of your chargers will work fine.
