What is a self tailing winch?

Old Lewmar 40 Winch Service?

  • Just bought two old non self-tailing Lewmar 40's. I was able to service one and get it running flawlessly but the second is frozen. It is the spindle assembly that appears to be locked up. Are there bearings in there that are frozen? Or pawls that are jammed?? I have it soaking in gasoline right now. Hopefully someone on here knows how to remove the spindle assembly. I've looked all over the net for schematics or instruction on this but to no avail. Help! I really don't want to send these back as I got a really good deal on them (now I know why).

Seattlesailor2000 seems to have found the Lewmar instructions very quickly. Obviously there are bearings but these winches are constructed to resist corrosion. You can get dirt and grit, and I suppose they can freeze up, but they should disassemble easily. Is the problem that after you removed the retainer clip, you could pull the drum off the spindle, or am I missing something?
