Evinrude outboard motor repair?

Price quote for starter replacement on a 1979 70 HP evinrude?

  • So I have a 1979 70 Horse evinrude. If you can get it running it runs great but the starter seems to overheat. While trying to start it will either start or overheat and no longer turn over until you let it cool down for quite a while. So I either want an approximate price that it would cost to replace the starter, or fix it if it is something minor. Or if it is something simple that I can do (a guy with little to no boat repair experience) to fix it. Oh and it's outboard motor with electric start and steering and what not. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure I understand your question. The starter motor or the engine overheats? It sounds like the starter will crank the engine, which then overheats, to the point it stops, then the starter will not crank it again till it cools off? If that is the case, the engine needs a new water pump. A few hundred to replace at a shop. But these old 70's are not worth much. What year is it, somewhere in the 1970's or 80's?

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/479_50.cfm You may find your ailing starter motor can be re-conditioned cheaper than the $290 odd for a new one - assuming the starter motor is on the way out. It might just need a set of brushes dropped in, or the winding insulation may be failing - or something else entirely. I don't think these are built like a car starter but instead are a fully sealed unit, and as a sealed unit may not be repairable at home economically.
