How do i find the year of boat motor without manual?

So, is it an outboard, inboard or I/O how big, HP, No.of cylinders, colors, fuel injected, year of boat (on title) size of boat. Is it Mercruiser, or Evinrude etc. Each company puts labels and ID plates on their motors in different places. Now, as to the manual.......the owners manuals tend to be less informative than you would think, unlike car manuals they tend to be brief. Service manuals are more useful, but expensive. So, tell us what you know, even post photos if you know how. Thanks for asking......
