How to analyze marine engine crankshaft deflection?

Is highway diesel safe in a marine engine?

  • recently had to put about 35gal. of highway diesel in my volvo penta engine's tank in order to make it home in the boat. I did ad a diesel additive that claimed improved lubrication at the time. Will this low sulfer diesel harm my marine engine or any of its sensors/boosters. What should i do....top off the take at the marina to dilute the fuel or is there an additive. any diesel marine engine experts out there?

  • Answer:

The only difference between"highway" , "marine" and "off road" diesel is that a dye is added to highway diesel for tax purposes. There is no problem running any of them in your engine.

It happened to me once. We bunkered in Jacksonville FL from road tankers with what used to known in the UK as DERV, (Diesel Engined Road Vehicles) because there were no facilities at the time to obtain heavy marine diesel. It took us to the UK with no problems. We put it through the centrifugal separators as usual, but it was so clean, there were no impurities to remove. The engine exhaust temperatures, a pressure charged two stroke Polar Atlas engine, were slightly less than normal, and the exhaust was very clear. If it worked for us for an ocean crossing, I wouldn't worry too much. We put in 300 tons of the stuff.

Wouldn't worry too much. Top the tank off with your normal fuel and keep a couple of spare filters to hand (you should anyway) should there be some matter released for whatever reason. Volvo's run on a pretty broad range of diesel fuels, they don't seem to get fussed by small issues like that.

Agree with other posters... Should be no problem... A dye is added to MDO in order to track its' use (Due to taxation and theft issues, primarily).

I run Cats in My sport fisherman and Dodge diesel. I always add additive and outboard oil in the diesel fuel as the diesel we get know is low sulfur, U did fine just keep adding additive and add some oil I use 1/4 Qt outboard oil per 30 Gals it has worked well and it's being used on the diesel forums.
