What is the difference between a standby battery and a deep cycle battery?

• I'm trying to get a grasp on how the lb thrust of a trolling motor will consume battery life. I have purchased the Intex Excursion 5, 12' inflatable boat, I'm going to get the bigger deep cycle battery from DicksSporting Goods $129. but i'm not sure if it would be more efficient to get the 30lb or 45lb MinnKota troller to push it with.. seems there is a significant speed difference. Will the higher thrust get me there faster and leave me more time fishing, or will a 30lb get me there slower and save battery power giving me more time fishing... thanks for any help or insights!

  If you increase the power of the trolling motor 50% (30 lb up to 45lb) you could expect to increase the power draw by the same amount, that is it can be expected to draw 50% more power potentially than the smaller motor under full load. In the real world of course you could look at it as the 30lb motor using two thirds of the 45lb motor's draw. But if you use the more powerful motor at a reduced rate you will use similar power as the smaller motor, with a healthy reserve just in case. While you will get increased speed from the bigger motor at full power, it may not be even a third a third faster in speed - rather it will cope with adverse wind and waves much better, providing you have sufficient battery capacity in the first place. Whatever system you choose be sure to get a high quality multi-stage charger to keep your battery fully charged at all times, and unless the battery maker specifically says it can do so to do not draw it down past 50% - rapid failure will result if the battery is noticeably slower, particularly to the point it is very flat indeed.
