    FIRST of all, you need to build up 365 PROVABLE DAYS of ON THE WATER EXPERIENCE and that usually can take 2 to 3 YEARS and that is just so you can write the FIRST TEST. It's at LEAST a 5 YEAR process and it can be LONGER.. There are those people who buy a boat and lie to take the 6 pack license (you see those morons on here all the time) that way EVERYONE has to call them "CAPTAIN".. but a REAL LICENSE can take 20 YEARS to earn

Depends on the tonnage limitation on the license and what country you're looking to get a license from. In the US, 360days is the minimum for the smallest captain's license, the OUPV (operator of uninspected passenger vessels, or 6-pack license. The days at sea requirement goes up from there, as do the training and competency assessments. The 100-ton master's license requires 720 days at sea and an examination, or 720 days at sea and successful completion of a class from an institution certified to teach and issue license testing certificates. For an unlimited master of oceans license in the US, you need 360 days as a chief mate on an unlimited tonnage ship. For a Chief mate's license, you must have 360 days experience as a 2nd mate and successfully pass the master's exam and competency assessments, as well as a certain set of STCW-related classes. Going down the ladder, for each job there are tests and or competency assessments that must be issued and signed by a licensed master.

well not to be a wise guy...have you gone to sea yet??? to sum up the answerer ...you need time on certain size vessels i believe that 88 gross tons is the minimum ton-age to start your time..one goes through an ordinary sea man ..an A.B..able bodied seaman ..third mate ..second mate chief mate captain ..it takes time ..years one does not go and sit for a captains license off the street
