What is the life of a Merchant Marine like?

-
Answer:
It's got some ups and downs, but I like it. Great pay, lots of vacation (4-6 months a year off), new places to see, lots of opportunities for advancement, good people. The downside? Being away from family and home, odd work hours, confinement to a ships' living spaces with people you may not like... it's not for everyone, but there's no going back. What am I going to do but laugh at the poor slobs waking up 30 minutes early to scrape the ice off their windshields? I go around the world, experience things that the average guy will never see, and I make more money in 4 months than a well-paid shoreside worker will make in a year.
