Can you build your own boat and legally drive it?
-
I've wanted to build my own boat for a long time now. I've read some books on how to do it and I think I can the only thing that i've never been able to find is can you build a boat and legally drive it in the ocean? I currently have my own sail boat and that has to be registered and I have insurance I just don't know if that's something I need to have or not. But could I build a boat and some how get a VIN number for it or something or would building my own boat be a waste of time because I wouldn't be able to use it .... assuming it floated when I put it in the water lol. I live in california any one know how to register a hand made boat?

Answer:
Build your boat. Go to the DMV when it is finished and apply for registration. In CA all boats require a registration card, proof of insurance, and a hull number with a valid sticker affixed. Just fill out the form and indicate "home built" in the Manufacturers section. They may require a visual inspection of the boat, but when I built mine it was not required.

Build your own is done every day. There are many sites on the internet where you can buy plans, there are books of plans and even magazines devoted to building your own boat. Whatever department in Ca looks after registration of boats can help you. I live in Fl, and went to my Tag Agency, and they had the forms. The only reason I had to register the boat was because it had a small auxiliary motor. Had it been pure sail, or I think pure row or paddle, no registration is required here. A good site for both plans and helpful advice is the Glen L boats site, though there are many others.

Call the coast guard, ask them what's necessary for registration. OF COURSE you can build a boat, I've built several, (racing hulls) for use in fresh water. In my state we only register the outboard motor so I didn't have to worry about a registration for the hull. Make sure it floats BEFORE you put the engine in/on.

If you dare. Many places don't require boats to be registered if they don't have an engine.
