What is a merchant marine?

I just got a job as a merchant marine, what should I bring with me?

  • I'm going out for 4 months with Military Sealift Command, but I'm not sure where yet. I figure I should bring some clothes, toothbrush, etc. But what about foul weather gear, a warm coat, work boots, work vest, things like that? Are they gonna supply them to me, and will they be any good? Or should I just buy my own?

  • Answer:

    clean underwear

It is difficult to pack for any season. I usually bring clothes to last a week plus one or two sets of clothes for going ashore. That way I only have to do laundry once a week. Yes you need foul weather gear, unless you're working in the engine room. Ships usually have slop chests aboard to buy incidentals and missing clothes. It's deducted from your pay.
