Why won't the key ignition switch start my outboard motor?

Is it a bad ignition switch? on outboard boat 40 hp johnson?

  • i have tried to start it with the key , nothing happens, brand new battery, it will turn over if i jump it straight to the starter but has no spark, i was wondering if the key being on would activate the distributor or whatever its called on an outboard motor, but i ordered a new ignition switch( 5 way prong) and hope that this will solve the problem, it does absolutely nothing when i turn the key on or turn it to start. the only thing it does is the battery valtage meter moves a hair , like if u werent up close staring at it you wouldnt see it move that hair ... any help here? before i take it to a boat mechanic

Do you have a kill switch on the control unit? If you do make sure it closed.

The very first thing I would do is make sure the battery terminals are clean, corrosion free and tight. Make sure the battery is fully charged as well. Starter solenoid could be bad. Try your new ignition switch if you have it ordered. Problems like this can be solved with the process of elimination. This is a difficult question to answer without knowing the year of your 40hp Johnson. Best of luck to you. I know how frustrating boat engine problems can be.
