How old do you have to be to drive a boat.?

  • i am 14 and i live in Victoria. i really want to get a boat license so i can go fishing on a rented boat with my mum, i was told that i could get a boat license but i want other opinions.

    all you need to go fishing is to pass the boaters exam. looks like you could take out a boat with up to 10hp motor (by yourself) larger motors require that you are accompanied by someone over 16. all boaters in canada need to have a boaters license. here is a link to the Canada boaters course http://www.boaterexam.com/canada/education/ No children under 12 years of age can operate a powerboat with more than a 10 hp motor. Youths 12 to 15 years of age may only operate a boat with a motor over 40 hp if accompanied and directly supervised by someone 16 years of age or older. Minimum age for operating a personal watercraft (sea-doo, jetski) is 16 years of age. New small vessel safety equipment and safety precaution requirements for boaters include a new “careless operation of a vessel” offence which requires boaters to travel safely and avoid putting themselves and others at risk. Operators of powerboats must have proof of operator competency. As of September 2009, this applies to all operators of all powerboats and PWC’s hope this helps

You don't need a license to go fishing with your mum. It's the driving of the boat that you need the license for, and it's similar to a driving permit, but you'd still need your mum to be along. Bottom line you need to mature and learn, that takes time and just as you have teachers in school, you need guidance and instruction on learning about being a good boater. Good luck!

Varies per state. Maine allows a 12 year operator up to 20 hp w/ adult in boat. Anything bigger than 20 needs an adult driver. 16 + years old In NH, you need a licence (safety course) for any boat engine over 25 HP. no matter your age. BUT the rentor of the boat will probably use your mom as driver due to insurance regs Most states do not require a fishing licence if under 16 years old

All US states require you to buy a Fishing License (that sounds like what you've already purchased). If you want to drive the boat, you'll need to check your State's DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). Many states require a written test and fee, and can start as early as 12. Good luck!

idk but im also 14 and i drive boats never gotten caught but i dont think i can. same with jetskis i think i need to be 16 or something but i have driven them.

In Minnesota you need to be 12 with a watercraft operators permit to helm anything larger than a 25 hp.
