Why won't the key ignition switch start my outboard motor?

No power to ignition on my outboard motor?

  • Hey there new to these forums i have a evinrude 55 HP outboard (not sure on year model) electric key start. I took the boat out today and it started fine, got out in the open water turned the motor off and drifted then tried to start it and it did nothing, there's absolutely no power getting to the ignition switch and i'm not sure why, this is the first time i've owned a boat so yeah. there's power getting to the power tilt/trim and my switch box but just not the ignition, i manually started the engine by hand with the key to ON and it started, i seen if it would work turning the outboard off with the key and it switched off Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated Thanks Mickey

All of these engines have a neutral start switch. It's operated by the shift-box. I'd check this first. The key sends voltage to the solenoid and from there the starter motor. Which cranks the engine. Good Luck!

Make sure all connections are clean and tight. Start by seeing if you have primary voltage to the solenoid. With the key switch in the start position, use a volt meter to check for voltage at the start terminal on the solenoid. if none, you have an open circuit before the solenoid, check each component for continuity ( primary wires, fuse, keyswitch). If you have primary voltage at the solenoid, check for secondary voltage from the solenoid to the starter. If none, your solenoid is defective, if you have power to the starter, your starter is defective, rebuild or replace. Don't forget to check the ground connections to the motor. Hope this helps.

check for lose connections.

It might be a loose connection, a bad starter switch or a bad starter relais. Get it checked by a mechanic, he/she can fix it.

There is a solenoid between the battery and the starter motor you can test by using a screw driver to bridge out the power at the starter but dont do it if there is petrol around as you make sparks also check the battery leads ~~

On the red wire running from the starter solenoid to the big red main wiring harness plug is an inline fuse holder with a 20 amp fuse. If your electric choke works, the fuse is ok, if not then check the fuse. Depending on what year motor you have, the tilt/trim could have a separate power wire. Next most likely culprit is the neutral start switch mentioned by a previous answerer. Try jiggling the shift lever while turning the key. 87.9% of all electrical problems on boats is caused by corrosion/loose connections, they all need to be bright & tight, battery to solenoid to starter. and engine block grounds as well.
