Why is a jet ski allowed to pull a banana boat?

  • I was wondering how a jet ski is allowed to pull a banana boat since the law states that you can't have more than the number of max occupants on a jet ski and tow-able combined. I see water sports companies do it all the time and was wondering if you have to have a permit or anything to do it.

    You are correct with your observation. The law is clear in that you need at least a 3 person jet ski to be able to tow anything like a tube, wakeboards etc. You need to have a seat for the people being towed. I have not seen a banana boat being towed by a ski but it would be illegal since there would not be enough seats on the ski for more then 1 or 2 people. The ski needs to have an operator and an observer on it while towing.

I believe this law is generally North America wide, and applies to the person being towed, not what they are sitting/standing/riding on. The law says that you must have seating for the driver, the watch person, and any persons being towed. To my knowledge, nobody makes more than a 3 seater PWC, so these people would be breaking the the law, EXCEPT- if they are participating in a recognized sporting or Entertainment event. In these cases, I'm sure special safety precautions would be in place.

if there's only one person on the jet ski and it's made for 2 or 3 people, then you could have 1-2 people on the banana boat. also, most places ignore the laws as long as it looks safe to do it, if it looks dangerous, the authorities will step in.
