What is the best website to shop for boat parts?

Installing cooling system on a outboard boat engine.?

  • Hi everybody So after lots of problems with my old outboard chrysler engine i came up with an idea. Not sure if its viable. Reason i am thinking about doing this is because of the price for parts. I have 2 props. 1 has parts of the cooling propella housing missing, the other was so corroded that 2 bolts snapped when i was trying to undo them. I have searched online and will be looking at one big big expense getting the parts i need. NO shop at all does these engine parts in the uk. If anybody does know a company then please let me know. Anyway. Back to the point. Idea was to have a pump on a seperate system to that of the engine. Not sure where i will attach the pipe yet though. Will be running from boat battery (Will only use boat for max of 1 our each time so no worries about battery draining). Also it is such a big job when the cooling prop goes wrong and ideally it needs to be changed once a year. Worst of all you cant actually see it and i have noticed that when i am on the boat i am not looking at the water pee holes because i am driving so if prop goes wrong it could so easily be missed leading to engine overheating. So main question is could the system be viable, also would this effect the cooling system bypass valve. I am also guessing i would have to get a propeller that bends just like the boats cooling propella because if the bypass valve is closed then there would be pressure on the caravan pump/ pump.

This question is interesting to me on several levels. Your "Chrysler" engine dates back to the 60's/70's. That's 40+ years old. What you suggest is modifying the engine, which might/ or might not work. I think you would be better served to pick-up a used engine, that will serve your needs. Put your money into something newer. There is the issue of further brake downs and leaving you stranded. You might get something for your old engine as parts. That will help offset the cost for the newer engine. Good Luck1

it could be done, but i doubt if you would be able to run wide open for long. i think that i would try a wash down pump, and plumb it to the power head.there's bound to be a fitting or hose that you can tap into. a temp gauge would be a good idea.

It's called an impeller and housing and if U could get the tube out the side of the lower housing U could attach a exterior pump the problem to little pressure and it over heats at high speeds to much and it would flood the engine threw the exhaust at slow speeds. or when stopped. U would have to have a control some how.

i'd think if you could just hook up a normal bilge pump, probably one of the bigger ones (which can run $100+ easily), it would work. at idle speeds at least. at full throttle, probably not....... however, its an OLD motor, and chrysler was never a very good one to begin with. and if this is on an alum hull, alum hulls can and usually do outlast the 1st outboard. my hull is a 1984 alum hull, it used to have a 1976 johnson on it. when the time came last year, i retired that johnson and put a 2011 mercury on it. i fully, and reseasonably, expect to be using that boat as it is now still in the year 2040. repower it. get another 30+ years of use out of it with a new and much more fuel effecient, and cleaner running, outboard.

I believe it would be feasible to tap into the water jacket with a threaded fitting that accepts a hose. If you plug the existing water tube, you should be able to build up all the water pressure you need. You might have to go to a higher pitched prop, to compensate for the reduced load on the engine. I'm kinda intrigued by your idea. A better forum for discussion is the repair forums over on http://forums.iboats.com It'd be great if you could post your progress and results over there, with pics.
