Which does which? Engine license Vs. Deck license?
-
I am most likely going to SUNY Maritime where I will be in the regiment of cadets and NROTC. I will be qualified to receive either a deck or engine license. I am planning on majoring in some type of engineering. After my 5 years in the navy as a commissioned officer I would like a job in the maritime industry. I don't really enjoy working with the meters in the engine room so I guess I should go for deck right? I believe deck is like navigation and stuff on the bridge, correct? Also, would I be making better money on a cruise ship or another job as a deck officer? Thank you.

Answer:
Yes, Deck is as indicated above deck. Engine is below deck. Not all majors qualify for both licenses: http://www.sunymaritime.edu/Academics/Undergraduate%20Programs/index.aspx Also consider applying to Usmma. Usmma Mids can direct commission to any service branch or can serve for a minimum of eight years in the USN Merchant Marine Reserves while working in the Maritime Industries. An appointment to Usmma is somewhat less competitive than to the other service acadmies. It requires a nomination but the nomination can be from any rep in the state of residence. State Maritime Academy Cadets can also join the USN MMR program. Since the tuition cost of Suny Maritime is on the low end, USN MMR could pay as much as an Nrotc Scholarship: http://www.csum.edu/web/admissions/military-options#ReserveProgram Usmma: http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=1461&profileId=6 Usna: http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=2998&profileId=6 Even though the figures don't look that different, one must consider that the lower end of the admit range at Usna is primarily available to students being recruited for athletics and other academy goals and this is not as much the case at Usmma. Usna recruits a lot of athletes and students for its other goals. Around 35% of the Usna freshman class are members of varsity athletic teams and most were athletic recruits. Good Luck!
