Were can I buy paint for an aluminum boat?

Im painting a 14.5 aluminum boat can i use any type of enamel paint on it?

  • i just bought my first boat. a 1988 14.5 crestliner fishhawk. but the paint is pretty faded due to it having the original paint. can i just clean the paint up and sand some spot that the paint rubbed off and then just hit the bare spots with self etching primer for aluminum, then just hit the whole thing with some primer? or does it have to be marine primer? then just paint it with a tractor enamel? or would i be better off just buying the actual boat paint? ive painted vehicles before just never a boat.

  • Answer:

you're better off using marine grade primer & paint. These are developed for marine applications and the abuse of water, salt, and other elements. True, this is more costly but why not do it right the first time instead of "saving" money. When in fact you end up spending more taking short cuts because you have to redo the paint after a few months or a year?
