How could I join the merchant navy as a rating?

Is it adviseable for a British lad to join the Merchant Navy as a Rating?

  • A friend wants me to ask this for him as he is worried that there are not many UK ratings any more- how long is the term of service and what is basic pay like (it varies from company to company but generally speaking). Thanks

  • Answer:

I don't know much about jobs in the UK merchant navy I'm afraid. But your friend could do a lot worse than to work for Trinity House. They would train him up and get him qualified as an Efficient Deck Hand and on the way he would learn all he needed to about the industry - both UK and elsewhere. And once qualified, he could probably go and work wherever he wanted - if not happy at Trinity House - or move onwards and upwards with them, if he was. The reason I answer your question is because I happened to notice, just tonight, that they are currently recruiting deck ratings! (Two positions) Training is for two years. They invite you to visit their website to download a full job description and application form or telephone: 01255 245109. http://www.trinityhouse.co.uk Best of luck.

NO TRUST ME! I very much doubt that you will get anywhere because they only employ foreigners as ratings, unless you join a little uk offshore boat in which case you wont see much of the world. Best bet is join as a cadet officer apprentice or join the royal navy.

As a serving MN officer, the game is out now, officer cadetships would be the best answer, but it's 4 years training, i have British ratings with me, all of them are over 60, and there is no one now training to replace them

don't know about basic pay or length of service but it would give you a great opportunity to see a bit of the world. That is if you're on a cruise liner or a cargo ship which travels internationally. If however, you get on board an effluent dumper you may only go to the north sea or the mid atlantic and back again.

Why not is my answer to the question. If you fancy going to sea as a deck hand why not try it. You can always resign if you don't like it same as any other job. Personally I would try for cadet deck officer or similar but that will require some educational standard to get into Nav School.
