How to find out if my title was stolen?

How can I find my stolen boat motor?

  • My boat motor was stolen and although I filed a police report, they have not investigated the theft. Is there anything I can do to try to find it myself? Is there a way to track it down if someone filed for a lost title and put it in their name? Should I bother looking in pawn shops? Thanks!

  • Answer:

You should find any proof of ownership you can, receipt, pictures anything is better than just saying hay that's mine. Then check craigslist, and pawn shops. But pawn shops are tough because they keep things in the back and pretend that the "owner" may come back for them. Just insist on looking for it, and if they won't cooperate tell them you are calling the police there because you suspect they have it. Also ask around, you would be surprised how many people know of some guy that steals things. In my old neighborhood there was a kid who stole bikes, he had like ten on his parents porch and everyone knew about it but the police did nothing. Good luck.

Check on craigslist.com to see if your boat moter is being sold on there. you never know if the theft is that stupid to put something they stole right onto the internet.

Unless you have the serial number & proof of purchase to back up your claim of ownership, your s.o.l. You can do an independent investigation if you think you have an idea where it is. Police have worse crimes to investigate. If you come across it, don't be the hero. Call the police & tell them you found your property. Be ready to prove it. Possession is 9/10 of the law. Look at pawn shops if you wish. Be ready again to prove it's yours.
