  I cant easily find Bremen on any of the Great Circle Calculators on line, so I used Hamburg, which is 6124 km or 3805 miles or 3306 nautical miles from NYC. How long? He would probably have come on NordDuetsch Lloyd or Hamburg-Amerika lines; in 1884 their ships were pretty primitive...paddle wheels weren't uncommon; auxiliary sail rigs weren't unknown; ships probably did 10-15 knots so say ten days to two weeks; if he was in immigrant class conditions then were pretty primitive.
