What kinds of boats are there?

What kinds of motor boats get 100+ miles of travel?

  • I was wondering what kinds of boats could carry passengers, let's say 5-15 people, and would be able to travel about 100 miles before refueling. Would a rigid hull inflatable boat work for this? I know there are factors like currents, wind, etc. that play into it, but try to keep the answer fairly simple. Thanks.

If you dig through Shark Weak's answer there are bits of correct information. You just have to ignore all the extra stuff. To specifically answer your question, No a rigid hull inflatable is not suitable for your use. At speed, it would burn about 25 gal an hour, but most of these only carry 12 to 18 gal of fuel. I don't think that model can carry 15, plus an operator, and mate. With that weight you would be looking in the 30-40 ft. range with max speed of 22-25 MPH twin engines burning 40+ GPH. so you would need a min. of 160 gal fuel capacity.

There are plenty of boats that'll carry the numbers you want. Inflatables are the worst for what you want. My 26' Express Cruiser could easily cover 100 miles and carry 8 people in comfort. My Motor Yacht will cover 600 miles and carry up to 25 people in luxury. It's all up to your wallet. But I've seen 18' Bow Rider boats cover 100 miles, but only carry 6 people.

YOu DO KNOW that if you are thinking of carrying PASSENGERS FOR HIRE that you can't just go out and buy a cheap AVON.. right? For 15 PAYING PASSENGERS you would need a boat with a HEAD and a boat at last 40 FEET LONG and it would need to be COAST GUARD INSPECTED and YOU WOULD NEED TO HAVE A CAPTAIN'S LICENSE.. and not one of those week-end warrior 6 pack licenses but a REAL CAPTAIN'S LICENSE.. you DO know that.. right/ If you have to come on HERE to ask what kind of boat can go 100 miles before refiling and big enough to handle 15 passengers then YOU DON'T KNOW SH*T ABOUT BOATS and you can get PRISON TIME for trying to run an ILLEGAL CHARTER BUSINESS just because you got fired from your last job and think you can start up a charter business. I can GUARANTEE you that, the COAST GUARD would be on you before you got out of the marina because the other LEGITIMATE CHARTER CAPTAINS would drop a dime on you so fast they would have to take a number to wait in line to REPORT YOU You aren't the FIRST MORON who has come here thinking they can ask a few questions so they can start up their 'charter' business when they lost their last job and are so stupid they think they can buy an old boat and run charters.. and you won't be the last because STUPIDITY IS CONTAGIOUS

if i replaced all the people and fishing gear in my boat with more of the removable 6 gallon gas tanks it uses, i could run 100+ miles without stopping for gas easily. probably wouldnt take more then 30 or 40 gallons with my boat. and i could do so while running 40+ mph the entire time. but my boat cant hold more then 3 people. and its a LIGHT alum hull that only has 60 hp, which is why it gets such good "mileage" while still having the speed. ultimately, its going to be a question of carrying enough fuel. and the built in tank probably doesnt carry enough fuel to power a much bigger motor that is pushing a much bigger boat.

Unless your looking at a 40' Inflatable. And that much weight the fuel would be the biggest issue.

The biggest factor is going to be the size of your fuel tank.
