  Some people need a nap.... First, it's a ferry Pilot, not driver. You would need to start with the basics: paperwork. Start here: http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/ You will need documentation, also you will need a TWIC (follow links in the above-link). Medical history, criminal history, the works. That's just to get near a boat. You should also contact ferry services to see what extra requirements beside the proper documentation and sea time that you need. Some ferrys are operated by cities (like New York City), others are county, state, or even private. You could also contact SIU, a union that usually places unlicensed and/or untrained but willing to learn people on ships as well. Depending on what you want to do in the future (because you simply cannot walk on a ship and pilot it; you will have the earn the license which takes TIME), this might be a decent job, but if you want to pilot a ferry now, it would be next to impossible. Deck-side jobs are becoming harder and harder to come by, even for those that have higher licenses (captains and mates).
