Why won't the key ignition switch start my outboard motor?

89 mercruiser 3.0l distributerless wont start, ignition coil?

  • new key switch, starter, slave solenoid, battery, clean wires, new spark and wires, fuse, etc. turn the key slave solenoid clicks no spark, used volt meter if i did it right yellow/red wire from 12v starter to slave 0v, and i get 12v every where else.motor isnt seized, jump the starter with screwdriver it turns but wont start, ignition coil and the 50amp circutbreaker are the only other things i havent replace. also why does yellow/red wire connect to smaller post (neg) on the starter and goes to thick post (pos) on slave? could my problem also be motion sensor or ignition amplifier?

  • Answer:

I am not quite sure what you are asking. Are you saying the motor is cranking over and will not start,or when you turn the key the motor is not even cranking over?If it is not cranking then you probably have a bad slave solenoid. Now before you think I'm crazy because you can hear it click, use your test light and make sure that when you turn the key you have 12 volts on both of the large terminals.I'll bet you do not as I have seen this many times before. Now if you are saying that the motor is cranking over and will not start then your problem is most likely the pick-up coil inside the distributor.I hope I have helped and answered the right question.Good luck.
