How do you get a captains license's and how much?

  • i AM LOOKING FOR A BOAT AND I WANT TO LEARN HOW READ CHARTS AN BE ABLE TO FIND MY WAY AT NIGHT.I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO BE KNOWLEGABLE OF ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT CRUISING THE OPEN WATER

  • Answer:

In order to get a captains license, you have to first of all have 365 days experience on the water.......Sea School does indeed run an excellent study course, but until you have document able provable time you cant sit for a test. In order to learn what you asked about, you can, for a very small fee for books, take the safe boating courses offered in your area by either the civilian educational arm of the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Axillary, or the US Power Squadron ( www.usps.org I think. Both will teach you how to operate, read chats, get out safely and get back safe.y....HIGHLY recommended

A couple thousand for books and tests plus much studying. To sit for a 100 ton liscence a person has to know more than an unlimited third mate. Forget about the captains lisence unless you plan on chartering your boat. Hang out at the marina and get to know people who seem to know what they are doing. Buy a chart or two of the local area along with dividers, triangles, parallels, steaks and a few six packs of beer. Then invite a couple of your friends out for an evening of sailing if they will show you some basics. Show real interest and they will be happy to help you out more.

There are schools around the country that offer the Captain's course. It costs about $1000, and takes about 6-8 weeks. Some schools offer a shorter, but more intense course. You still have to pass the U.S.Coast Guard test, which is a 4 part test that can be taken over a period of time, if you choose. Here's one in St. Petersberg, Florida. www.seaschool.com

if you are in the US you most likely will not be able to get a captains rate right now. the lowest rating is called a six pack and allows you to carry up to six people in a small boat. it requires a year of experence in your home waters as well as a fairly tough test. note that the year is 365 days on the water so it may take you several years to meet that. if all you want to do is own and operate a boat you do not need a capt's rating. im most states an adult needs nothing but money to operate a power boat. i would suggest you take classes such a those offered by the power squadron or other such group. i would suggest you buy a copy of Chapman's Piloting as a very good start. its the bible of small craft operations.
