At what point does a boat receive a name?
-
I see sailboats and other small craft that are named, and things like kayaks and other mass produced boats have models. What exactly is the definition of when it is acceptable to name a boat? Is it if it is hand built, regardless of size, that it receives a name? Is there a size distinction, so every boat over so many feet would be named? Are there in fact any even general ideas about when to name a boat and what kinds of boats receive names? I never see powerboats or pontoon boats with names-pretty much no trailered day cruiser boat seems to have a name. So what gives?

Answer:
I don't know where you are living but I see trailered boats with names on the stern all the time.

You can name any size boat anything You wish to name it. There are no rules about naming boats of any size. My 38' sailboat has a name. The 9' dinghy has a name that is based on the name of the big boat. My kayaks are not named. Name whatever you want to name whatever you want to name it.

When we bought "Rum Runner" years ago (1970's) we immediately re-named our dingy/tender "Beer Chaser" The dinghy used to be called many things prior, of which only "Plywood Limpet" is printable here (it used to be stored on a large area of flat rocks with many other similar ones, you can see the image I'm sure...) but as Australians tend to call things they like by the worst insult you can vocalise I leave the other names to your imagination. Promise you won't be close..... Oh, and we never sank once no matter what we called any of our boats. Officially, anyway.

my boat is named "Reservoir Dog" Name it before its maiden voyage if you like. If you acquire a boat that's never been named, you may name it. don't change the name of a boat without first petitioning poseiden (or neptune, if you prefer)

You really can name your boat whatever you want, no matter what type it is. The name doesn't go on the title to the boat. Like the other poster stated, it is bad luck to take the boat on the first trip without naming it if you intend to name it.

While any size boat may be named the practical answer is when the boat needs an identity... such as when it receives a radio and station license licensed for the marine radio bands.. All boats licensed to carry passengers are usually named as they are required to have a radio station license.

Depending on where you live, naming boats is usually a "lake, marina, etc," thing. You can name a boat the day it's built. Some owner's and other's say to never rename a boat. It will bring the boat and its occupants bad luck.
I HAVE A NAME THE GENERAL' NAME IT BEFORE YOU TAKE IT OUT ON THE WATER OR ITS CONSIDERED BAD LUCK IS ALL
