Am I getting a good price for this Mercury Capri?

I have a 1985 mercury black max??

  • It turns over but won't start. I am an electrician so I am familiar with the dc wiring, but I don't seem to be getting fire to my coil packs. I have pulled each spark wire and and checked fire to the block and nothing on any of them. Thats what led me to the idea my coils are not getting fire. As I mentioned, I am an electrician, but I am not familiar to much with any electronic components that may or may not be causing this issue. I have just recently bought this boat and so I really don't know how or when this problem occured. I just got it for a price I could'nt pass up. I have checked the ignition switch for proper function in each position and it checked out ok. But where all the wires land on the motor itself, Im clueless as to what each wire is or is'nt supposed to be doing. I have ordered a manual for the motor with schematics and hopefully will help me trace out and troubleshoot the problem. In the mean time while I'm waiting on the book, I was hoping someone might be able to guide me in the right direction. The fish are biting and I'm getting impatient to go. Please help!

Glad to see you have a manual coming, you will need it to troubleshoot the ignition. You will have to test each component by using resistance values, which will be given in the book. My guess, as you have no spark on ALL cylinders is the trigger coil, but only by eliminating each part can you be sure. Here is a DVA and resistance value chart, this may help you. http://www.maxrules.com/cdi/MercDva2003A.pdf

There is just a small chance the big plug off the main wiring harness to the motor is suffering from "pushed pins" . Also my first check would be the overboard kill switch and the other "no start" safety devices both in the control box and (sorry if I'm thinking of a different model) the oil injection tank. When your book shows up, they will walk you thru all the possibilities. One last suggestion is to give it a compression test before you spend a lot of $$$ on something that would not make the team anyway. That early Black-Maxx had some piston and cooling issues.
