UK: I am considering a career in the Merchant Navy. Is this a good career choice for an unattached young man?
-
Hello, Dan's flat-mate Steven here. I am 20, British and single and I want a career with good pay and a chance to see the world. A lot of my friends are being sucked in to the financial rat-race that is London and I want to avoid this at all costs! I began thinking of a life at sea and the Merchant Navy seems ideal; long periods travelling, hard work, good pay and something unusual. Is there anything I should know about this career choice which might not be included in the college recruitment leaflets? What are the pros and cons of a long career in the merchant fleet? Thanks.

Go for it.When I left School in 1948 I wanted to do just that.but could not go to the National Sea School(Gravesend) untill I was 16 yrs old, so I worked in a Drawing Office for 2ys,very boring, then off to Gravesend and a Passenger Liner,Wonderfull,Many adventures and I have no regrets .Now 75 yrs old,but still "messing about in boats" Take the chance you have now.

Pros - you are completely looked after and catered for. Cons - you might get killed, crippled or injured in training, active service, etc. It's a good career, but not necessarily a safe one.

My father was in the merchant navy from a young boy till he retired, he loved the life. Great chance to meet different people and go to many countries around the world.

It's great for a single person. It's hell on your family life if you're married, especially after kids come. Things are better now with internet, etc.

Well, my bro did about 20 years on freighters and tankers, and my cousin the same but as a steward on liners and cruise ships. They both enjoyed themselves, and would do it again but recommend you avoid tankers. The smell of oil is everywhere!!! Be prepared for boredom - the Pacific ocean takes a long time to cross at 15mph! Good luck whatever you choose.

I agree with snakeman and have given his response a thumbs up. It's bloody marvelous to discover a non military young english man with a sense of adventure, instead of the **** that passes for english men that infested the country when I left it. Good for you and I think you should do it.
