What should I look for when buying a used jet ski?

Im looking for a stand up jet ski, can you help me out?

  • I am interested in purchasing a used stad up jet ski. My budget is about $1000. I dont need a trailer because we will just keep it at my cabin so we dont need to move it anywhere. Could you suggest some skis to look at that are nice. How many cc's do the freestyle jet skis have. When buying a used ski what are the things i should look over. Thanks for all your help (in advance)

  • Answer:

A $1,000 will allow a purchase of a jet ski that has some age, probably mid 1990's. The hours used will be an important factor as well and a technician with proper equipment ONLY can tell you this. Always have a qualified technician inspect before you purchase or you may have very costly repairs. You will be looking, in all likely hood, at a Kawasaki. Very good units if they have been properly maintained and used correctly. These over the years have installed engines from 85CC to 110CC. SeaDoo has made a unit over the years capable of standing or seating in one. You will not find in your price range, I don't think. These currently have a 110CC installed. Again, with your limited budget shop around. You may find someone just ready to unload their stand up jet ski at a good price. I seriously doubt a boat dealer can help due to pricing, so, stick with ones personally owned. Always ask if they have maintenance records and, if so, call their technician and ask about the unit. Good luck, these are fun!

Actually resale of the standup is quite low, they are not very popular. Harder to learn to ride, harder on the body, most places cannot legally tow a rider. Although they are quicker (acceleration) and can do more tricks on them. I have owned both Kawasaki jetskis and Yamaha superjets. I generally liked the yahamas better, they wasn't quite as finicky as the kawaskis. besides general condition, look for cracks in the handlepoles and cracks on the covers where the handlepoles come down. make sure to bungee cord the handlepoles down when transporting or they will beat themselves to death/ other thing is makes sure the mats are in good condition or replace them, I replaced mine with aftermarket, hydroturf/ sold the two 1994 superjet 701cc and a double trailer for $1750 last year.
