1972 Johnson 6HP troubleshooting?
-
I have a 1972 Johnson 6HP that I am trying to fix up to put on my 10ft aluminum boat. These motors are pretty simple in a sense of if you have spark, air and fuel, they will start. Well I can get it to start, but only for a few seconds. Here are a few issues I am running into. I might add that I by no means am a mechanic, so you may have to dumb things down for me. I just break things down to simplest form, which is why I even got this far into the project. -Oil/Fuel mixture coming out of the underwater exhaust. This is basically my main concern, does it indicate something major is wrong with this motor? - Motor runs strong for a few seconds, then dies out when I turn the choke off. I have adjusted the rich/lean idle screw, but am still having the same issue. If anyone can help me with this matter it would be greatly appreciated, I cant let this motor defeat me!!!

Answer:
Since you don't know much about mechanics I suggest you don't open the carb --- you'll never get all the pieces back in. Instead, try spraying some carb cleaner down the throat of the carb, or even ether starting fluid. What you need to do is dissolve the gum/varnish which was left behind when the fuel evaporated which was left in the engine when it was stored. The fuel pump is an easy rebuild -- get parts online, and expect to pay around $6 for parts and almost that much for shipping. To see if you need to rebuild the pump, disconnect the line at the carb, then get the pump charged with fuel using the squeeze bulb. Now pull the start rope and see if fuel comes out the line.

You have spark and compression, because it runs, if only briefly. The Carburetor, needs to be cleaned and rebuilt. There are ports that supply the fuel to the engine. These carbs are pretty simple and easy to rebuild. You can get generic service manuals at your local library.

It does run so that's good. What you need to do is remove and rebuild the carb & fuel pump.Once you have done this,it should run fine.It is not a hard job to do.Just be sure to clean everything and blow out with compressed air.Hope this helps.

pull the carb and rebuild, spraying carb cleaner in the carb will do nothing, the carb is easy to rebuild and the carb kit is cheap.
