Why is public transportation in India so inefficient?

Transportation in India in 1940's?

  • How was the transportation with in cities and between cities? Also how do the British civilians used to travel within the city? What about the transport in rural areas?

  • Answer:

It was the Railways...there were several provincial Railways and many privately operated railways. Post Independence all of them got nationalized and The Indian Railway was formed by Govt.of India. In Rural India it was by Bullock Carts, other cattle Carts, Horse Back, Camel back, Palanquin or carried by men and also by walking. In river based places boats were also popular. Post World War II, some automobiles were also used for public transportation, these were all condemned/disposed vehicles from US Army.
