As a native of Salem, Id suggest National hotel for inexpensive yet safe accomodation. If you are ready to spend more for a wee bit of comfort/luxury id suggest The Salem Castle/Chenney's Gateway(Both 3star).LRN Excellency is also a very good place...small yet neat.
