Is the Taj Mahal overrated?

What (REAL) documentation proves the case for ‘Taj-Mahal’...part 3?

  • This is based on the Rajasthan State archives at Bikaner which preserve three ‘firmans’ (Orders) addressed by Shahjahan to the Jaipur's ruler Jai Singh. These Orders were to supply marble (for Mumtaz's grave and Quranic grafts) and stone cutters. Jaisingh was apparently so enraged at the blatant seizure of the Taj-Mahal that he refused to oblige Shahjahan for further desecration of the Taj-Mahal. Jaisingh looked at Shahjahan's demand for marble and stone cutters, as an insult to injury. He refused to send any marble and instead detained the stone cutters in his protective custody. The three Orders demanding marble were sent to Jaisingh within about two years of Mumtaz's death. Had Shahjahan really built the Taj-Mahal, why would new marble have been needed immediately after Mumtaz's death? Why do the three Orders not mention either the Taj-Mahal or the burial? The cost and the quantity of the stone also are not mentioned. Does this not prove that an insignificant quantity of marble was needed just for some superficial tinkering and tampering with the Taj-Mahal? Could Shahjahan have built a fabulous Taj-Mahal by dependening on a non-co-operative Jaisingh? Why do the Indian Government officials ignore this evidence?

  • Answer:

I have not read the originals of these 'Orders' so base my answers on the information you give here. If the Taj-Mahal was built by Jai-Singh he would be correct in the feeling of being insulted. The discrepancies in the Orders can be explained as clerical errors but not considering the fact that this was deemed to be a personal project by Shah Jahan. The accumulation of errors needs investigating further. The Indian government is unlikely to launch an investigation on this as it will lose much tourist dollars if it removed the [false] mystique of the 'love story'. It would also cause riots and killings among the Hindus and Muslims in India. This would only add to the already volatile situation in this part of the world. The truth will eventually come out, however.

there isnt any as far as i know but history is like that we probably will never know the truth and i personally prefer this story over any other truth ppl come up with even if it is all a complete sham. some things in life are more fun if lied about. and it isnt like not knowing the knowledge that the taj was actually stolen by force and violence is hurting us. the other story is much more beautiful.
