The best way is just come to delhi. As you r also having two boys it would not be of any problem. First get equipped yourself with the books and maps on indian tourism. The major places to visit in India are as follows: Nort India 1. Delhi 2. Jaipur 3. Udaipur 4. Lukhnow 5. Chandigarh South n Western India 1. Mumbai 2. Goa 3. Bangalore 4. Chennai 5. Ooty 6. Kanyakumari 7. Cochin After arriving in Delhi you can contact the nearest Indian Tourism Development Corporation office(ITDC) there you can either select from the wide range of packages or they will even assist you in plannig your own tours by giving you the details and providing you with the itenary. But never get along with unknown guides as they may create problems. Confirm anything from several people, look for a policeman for help of any sort. People of India are very helpful but some are real crooks. Don't accept any eatables from anyone and use sealed food atmost possible. You can also buy guide books from the airport only their you can find many book stalls. For anysort of further information on any of the cities you can log on to the official website of ITDC: http://tourism.gov.in/ or you can try looking to these sites also http://www.tourisminindia.com/travellercorner/index.htm http://www.india-travel.com/ The key to perfect travellin in India is : 1. Bargain a lot (around 50% each time) 2. Hire local guides instead of package tours. 3. Searh for the best fares. The link below will take you to all the government services of india whether it be railways or tourism or Hotels or other sites. http://goidirectory.nic.in/tourism.htm Happy Travelling!! You r most Welcomed To "INDIA" the country with a diifference. For any sort of further clarification or details you can call me personally at [email protected]

Dear Elbereth, I see from your question that you are a traveller and not a tourist. I am so glad you chose to come to India. In India you most definitely could do without a tourist guide. There are thousands of people like you that visit India without any reservations, and decide where they want to be on the spur of the moment. I myself have travelled to many other countries and done the same thing. So I understand what you are asking about. There are a few questions you should ask yourself. Where in India will you land? If its in Mumbai, finding a place to stay wont be very difficult. I would suggest you take a pre paid taxi from the airport. You could go to colaba, where you will find many other tourists, ask around someone will tell you where you can find a hotel that suits your budget. You would do well to carry a copy of Lonely Planet for India, as well as copies of specialized editions that are available for the other parts of the country. India is a huge and fascinating country, Im sure you will hardly ever find the time to get bored. There are different means of travelling to the different parts of the country, by flight ( I wouldnt advise it, as you would miss out the interesting parts) you could go by train, train journeys are very nice. If you want to be very comfortable book an Airconditioned sleeper class ticket. these are available as 2 tier, or 3 tier, meaning 2 bunk beds or 3 bunk beds. You can also travel by luxury coach or the local state transport coaches that are very interesting, but very uncomfortable as well. You should have a basic idea about where you would like to visit, someof the important destinations are Mumbai, Goa, Rajasthan, Kerala, Calcutta, Utranchal, Varanasi, etc. Almost every place has its own charm, and its own attractions. There are a million experiences awaiting you at every twist and turn. A small word of caution, Drink only bottled water or water that you are sure is safe to drink as in restaurants etc. Take care of your belongings or some poor person will decide that he has more use for it than you do. Before you come to India I would suggest you read a few good books written by famous authors about India. Among them 1) City of Joy - by Dominique La Pierre. 2) Shantaram- By Gregory David Roberts. You could even get an Italian translation of these two books as they were hugely successful masterpieces. Best of Luck and I hope you enjoy your stay in India. you could contact me on Yahoo messenger [email protected]

Chao! Como Stai? This is an Indian girl :-) Its nice to know that you are visiting India. I just visited italy. Should say I loved Italy and the people. You dont require tourist guides to guide you around India. Its perfectly fine travelling on your own. I usually travel in India all alone... Up north of India you could go around the hill stations... Shimla, Mcleod Ganj (very touristy), Dalhousie (i found this place a bit boring), Kulu Manali or Leh ladhak. South of India...if you are fond of beaches.... the best would be kerala or Goa. Tamil Nadu is good too. If you need any help... feel free to email or IM me.

I am sure you can make many friends here. Have fun and just ask around. Make friends with Indians. They are friendly and nice and they can guide you to the best places. Go to all the cities north and south and you will have a nice time. Take care and email me if you come to Chennai coz I am from Chennai. I used to live in USA for 2 years but otherwise I am here in India. Take care and have a nice week planning for India.
