What are the components in a topographical survey?

Where can I buy/find topographical maps by the Survey of India in Pune?

• I'm looking for topographical maps of India because I want to go trekking. I've looked in all major bookstores and even they had no clue about where I should go. Any detailed maps will do.

  Topographical maps are available in DEHRADUN with ASI headoffice. You can find trekking maps on internet also. Some regions of himalayas are not available in INDIAN STORES as INDIAN GOVT. does not allow restrcited area maps to be sell-out in open bazaars. You have to search international websites...but paying and getting them and then possesing them being an INDIAN in remote regions is problamatic. I was once questioned very badly and searched very very badly in KINNER KAILASH CIRCUIT in TRIBAL AREAS OF HIMACHAL PRADESH. Reason was very small....I was carrying a photocopy of area map...not even showing contrours...but it was a big big problem for me to make a ITBP offider understanding this that now you can see anything on GOOGLE EARTH.
