• I am going to India and I would like to be able to budget my trip. This means that I need to know the prices of basic items, for example: How much does food cost? How much does a custom made sari cost? What do people charge for a henna tattoo?

  India is a very vast geographical area, different climatic conditions, various customs at various different places, different sects - different castes - different religions so diffrent things matter differently to all these people. India is a hugh population country with vast demands for every product and service. It is very difficult to get a comprehensive list of products and services which will apply to entire country. For example a coconut costs about Rs.10/- in Mumbai and Rs.40/- In Jammu ( which is hardly 24 hour train journey from Mumbai.) But generally it will cost you about Rs.125/- for decent meals ( Lunch and Dinner + breakfast and teas ) a day. This is about max $2.5 a day. Travel is cheaper ( trains are definitely too cheap even if you travel by AC coaches). Accomodation ranges from Rs.250 to Rs.15000. But nice & decent accomodation at various place ( barring metro cities ) will be about Rs.500/- to Rs.900/- a day ( $10 to $18 a day). You need to pay entry fees at few tourist destinations, inner line permits at border areas but these are at best nominal. A custom made sari will cost you too much. Paithani variety in Maharashtra costs almost Rs.25000+ per piece and takes almost a month to produce one. ( am talking genuine quality ). Similiarly every state boasts of a specific variety of sari. Henna tattoo costs are very nominal. In fact if you get an opportunity to participate in a family function, it will be totally free. Be in touch whenever you need info about India.
