What is the name given to Hindi speaking people of Northern India?
-
Hi, I am an Indian but I have been born and raised in the UK and so I ask this question to learn more about my heritage. In my family I have a mix of central Indian and South Indian roots so I don't tend to associate myself with one groups of Indian and I am proud to simply be an Indian (rather than a north Indian or a south Indian etc). Anyway, I was just wondering what is the name to people in India - mainly in north India in the Hindi belt who speak Hindi as a mother tongue. This sounds like a dumb question but I have wondered this for a while. Other language groups in India have their own names such as Punjabis, Gujaratis, Marathis, Bengalis, Telugus, Tamils, Malayalis etc. but I have never heard of someone refer to native Hindi speakers as "Hindis". Someone once told me that mother tongue Hindi speakers are Punjabi Hindus that no longer speak Punjabi anymore - but surely since the Hindi belt has over 500 million people, there can't be that many Punjabis. Or are there people reffered to by their caste? It just doesn't make sense to me. And an answer would be much appreciated as I have wondered this for a while now. Oh and by the way when I say Hindi speaker I don't mean anyone that speaks Hindi as well as their mother tongue, I just mean Hindi speakers that are from the Hindi belt area of north India.

Answer:
Unlike Malayalam, Marathi and Tamil, Hindi (and all its dialects) are not spoken by a single state. There are several states where Hindi is the mother-tongue of most of its people. The Hindi Belt or Hindi Heartland defines a linguistic region in North and Central India where Hindi is widely spoken. This region consists of the following states: * Bihar * Uttar Pradesh * Madhya Pradesh * Haryana * Rajasthan * Himachal Pradesh * Uttarakhand * Chhattisgarh * Jharkhand So, Hindi-speaking people are known as Hindi speakers. That's it. South Indians call them Hindi-wallahs, but I think that's offensive.
