Do you directly know of any local nonprofit organizations in India, who are looking for interns or volunteers?

I'm an (originally persian) American citizen and i would love to have an internship in India for a few weeks to a couple of months (or more, not sure yet). I'm looking for a trustworthy nonprofit group that works towards community development, women's empowerment, vocational training for marginalized people, human rights, poverty reduction etc etc etc. I don't speak standard hindi or any other languages or dialects of india, and i would need to make sure that the organization is legitimate, so maybe a website would help? I would also ask them to kindly help me find some sort of housing or homestay or something. I really want to learn more about the nonprofit world, i have taught english in the past too, so that can come in handy. i believe in self-sustainability and vocational training and development in communities. I have a lot to give and a lot to learn. the problem is that i found a lot of western organizations that claim to put you in to intern or volunteer in communities around the world, but then they have extremely high fees to register with them, which doesn't even include airfare or anything! I would just like to find a nice organization who would like the help of someone for a little while, who would be nice to help me out when i arrive and find a place to stay a bit, and then i'd pay for my travel expenses and go. I need links directly to local grassroot organizations though...anyone?

Answer:
I live in the Dharamtala district (the central, tourist area where the Fairlawn Hotel--featured in the film "City of Joy"--is located) of Kolkata, and many of the foreigners volunteer at Mother House http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalighat_Home_for_the_Dying. As far as I know, though, no one gets paid there. Perhaps a better option for you, and perhaps what you are looking for, is http://www.ngosindia.com/

Im from australia and my family went to an Indian orphanage in july 2010 as part of a holiday. We only volunteered there for 5 days but when we were there there was two american friends who were there for like 5 months or something volunteering and they seemed to like it. The orphanage is in Chennai and is named Prema Vasam. It is an orphanage for disabled kids as well as healthy kids and lives off of volunteers and donations from a company named australind in australia. Australind has been running since 1979 and is now supporting 2 orphanages in India. We had a really good time and the staff and owner- Selvin Roy are really nice. The staff speak fluent english and most of the kids do too because the second language is english and it is taught pretty heavily over there. They provide you with meals and accomodation in the orphanage which isnt 5 star or anything but for an indian orphanage it is pretty good. We slept on beds in a room with a fridge and fans and meals were mostly rice and meat. When we were there they ate seated on the floor but they recently got enough funds and a grant from the government to put in an elevator for the disabled kids and a table. You can catch a taxi into the city from the orphange if you want to see stuff. To help out all we were asked to do was to help the kids with their homework when they came back from school and to entertain the disabled kids on the weekdays because their days are pretty boring- they got facinated by anything we had such as cameras and all wanted to take a photo. They had 2 or 3 rehabilitation people employed to look after the disabled kids but there is a fair few of the kids so they want volunteers to help out. We weren't expected to spend a lot of time with them each day, but we thought we should because they were giving us food and accomodation. You could contact Prema Vasam and/or Australind if you want. Prema Vasam's email is premav07&bsnl.in and their website is www.premavasam.com and should have most the details there if your'e interested.. Their address is Thiru.V.Ka.Road, Gerugambakkam. Chennai - 602 101. Australind's website is http://sites.google.com/site/australindchildrensfund/Australind and the contact details are there. it doesnt cost anything to stay there but we made a donation to help with the dining table that they put in cos they were nice people. also if you ever go you could say hi from brad cox if you want :D and that i sent you too Hope this helps:)
